Section B – Scenario-Based Questions

During a youth behavioral health internship, you will likely face complex and emotionally challenging situations. For each scenario below, select the response that is most like what you would actually do.

There is no single “correct” answer that we’re looking for; rather, we hope to get a better sense of how you might address similar situations if they were to arise during your internship.

B1. Difficult Family(Required)

You’re interning at a family services agency. One family you’re assigned to misses three appointments in a row, and when they finally show up, the parent is short with you. Which is closest to your likely reaction?

Section C – The Los Angeles Community and You

Youth behavioral health refers to the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of mental, emotional, and behavioral conditions in children, adolescents, and young adults. In California, roles are increasingly available to individuals with associate’s or bachelor’s degrees, working primarily in public schools and community clinics. These roles include, but are not limited to, Certified Wellness Coaches (CWC), community wellness specialists, case managers, and behavioral health specialists. As of 2026, statewide salary benchmarks published by the California Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI) for its Certified Wellness Coach Employer Support Grant identify a median salary of approximately $63,500 for CWC II, plus benefits; other bachelor’s-level roles in California generally fall in a comparable range. The UCLA YBH Minor is designed to prepare students for these roles. The following questions are intended to understand your interest in a career working with youth and families facing behavioral or emotional challenges.

During their second year of the minor, students are expected to participate in a year-long internship. Internships are typically in a single location or region, 8-10 hours per week, usually arranged as one full day or two half days. A variety of placements are available, including clinics and schools around Los Angeles, some of which involve different kinds of work and may require different skills and competencies.
